How to take care of your curly and wavy hair by following the Curly Girl Method

This Method, explained in Lorraine Massey’s book “Curly Girl: The Handbook,” is a hair care method, for both curly and wavy hair, that trades in damaging habits (like shampooing and heat styling) for a healthy curly hair regimen using curly friendly products.

When this book was first published, the vast majority of hairstyles that you saw were straight, in fact, many women have felt pressured to straightening hair through the use of relaxers and flat irons. In her book, Massey even shares details about how she was ridiculed as a kid for having curly hair.

Over the years, this book along with several others targeting curly girls helped fuel an emerging natural hair movement for women with naturally curly hair.

This means totally ruling out direct heat, silicones, sulfates, drying alcohol … and anything that messes with your natural curl pattern.

The Curly Girl Method calls for the use of a cleansing conditioner /cream instead of shampoo (also called “Co-washing”).

Popular variations include the use of sulfate-free shampoos (also called “Low poo”), which are more widely available now than they were in 2001.

CGM also includes tips and techniques for using hair gel and other styling products …

How the Curly Girl Method works?

The Curly Girl Method is so effective because it allows your hair to retain all of its natural oils. Between afro hair and waves, there are a whole number of different curl patterns. The Curly Girl Method works on all of them, it’s just about finding the techniques that work for you!

Harsh shampoos and constant heat exposure strip the natural oils from the hair leaving it dry, frizzy and damaged.

By avoiding these and only using cleansing conditioners and low poos to cleanse the hair, you’ll keep all the natural oils and add an extra surge of moisture.

For straight hair, this isn’t as much of an issue as the sebum from the scalp can travel along the hair shaft, but with curly hair, the curls will prevent the sebum reaching the ends, leaving your hair dry and unprotected.

Curly Girl Method - Basics steps

Cleanse with sulfate free shampoo or co-wash.
Condition with CG approved conditioner and use a leave-in conditioner.
Use a microfiber hair towel or cotton t-shirt to squish the water out of your hair.
Spread CG approved styling products to wet hair and scrunch up to encourage curl formation.
Don’t touch your hair and let it dry or use a diffuser for more volume and definition.
Commit to deep conditioners or masques regularly once a week. Combine with heat by using thermal heat caps to help deep conditioners penetrate the cuticle better leaving the hair more moisturized.

Frizz is just a curl waiting to happen and curls are not a trend; they are a lifestyle. With a cashmere sweater comes a care label. Human hair falls under the same molecular structure as fur, wool, and feathers. If your curl care label could speak, here is what it would say:

I am made up of organic matter of various layers and structures. As you wear me in the real world, I change depending on the way I am treated and with atmospheric conditions. However, this is what gives me character!

No washing with detergent shampoo (I am like wool, I will shrink and dehydrate)

No brushes or combs when I am dry (I will frizz, fray and break)

No cutting me when I am wet (because I do not stay wet and I can shrink many inches);· No carving, slicing, thinning or razoring (my hair fibre is not meat or wood)

No blow-frying (you can’t un-fry my fibers)

Don’t hide me for long periods of time under somebody else’s hair· You take me wherever you go. I can be considered your finest thread and accessory
